It is from Allah’s infinite Mercy and Love that He has granted humankind the ability to draw close to Him. Through purification of the heart, transformation of character from that of base intentions to praiseworthy behaviour, and serving both God and humankind, there have been men and women through the ages who have reached this level of sainthood (wilaya), friendship, and gnosis of God (maarifa). Of these people, God says:
“Lo! verily the friends of Allah! no fear comes upon them, nor shall they grieve.” (Quran-10:62) Chapter Yunus.
On the authority of Abu Hurairah [a companion of Prophet Muhammad] who said: the Messenger of Allah [prayers and Blessings of Allah be upon him] said:
Allah the Almighty has said: “Whosoever shows enmity to a friend of Mine, I shall be at war with him. My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have imposed upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory works so that I shall love him. When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him and were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant him it.” (Related by Imam Bukhari)
Seeking out these inspirational people, from whom to learn about the self and the Divine, has been an integral part of Islamic spirituality. Each spiritual master (Shaykh) has learned, and been given authorisation (idhn) to teach, from a master who in turn learned from one who reached this station of gnosis, all the way back in an unbroken chain (silsila) to the Prophet Mohamed, peace be upon him. He in turn learned from the Archangel Gabriel.
